Leopoldo Cavalli was born in Bologna in 1974 and holds dual Italian and French nationality. He spent the early years of his childhood in France before completing his studies in Bologna, where he graduated in 1997 with a degree in Economics and Business. Already a musician, pianist, and singer-songwriter, he joined the family company IPE¹ at the age of 19, alongside his university studies. IPE was founded in 1959 by his grandfather and great-uncle, and later led by his father, who in the 1980s began transforming it into a company with international reach in the upholstered furniture segment.
In 2000, Cavalli was appointed CEO, marking the beginning of a significant transformation of the company. Production, which had been internal and based in Bologna, was outsourced to various Italian artisan districts. Under his leadership, IPE grew from a family-rooted Italian luxury furniture company into a highly profitable international business. He helped position the company in the global luxury living market through the development of “total look” collections and by applying a bespoke approach to the creation of unique yet reproducible pieces. In 2004, together with his sister Eleonore, an architect and Creative Director, he launched the Visionnaire² brand, which quickly entered multiple markets including Russia, China, the United States, and the Middle East. Visionnaire now boasts over 40 mono-brand stores, 6 of which are directly managed. This success consolidated IPE’s financial position, transforming it into one of the world’s leading luxury furniture producers.
In 2010, the investment fund Alto Partners joined the company, followed four years later by the prestigious European fund Apheon, leading to a diversification of IPE’s shareholder structure. In 2017, Cavalli temporarily stepped down as CEO, returning in 2019 with renewed vision—most notably with a focus on digital transformation. He introduced a product configurator project that revolutionized the company’s entire order intake process, improving efficiency and accuracy across the sales network. He also overhauled the distribution strategy, opening six new directly operated embassies in just three years—in Milan, London, Dubai, Miami, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong—each led by one of four appointed managing directors.
In 2023, he launched a new division within the company, Visionnaire Real Estate, with an ambitious first project in Dubai slated to be sold for over $80 million in autumn 2024.
In addition to his work at Visionnaire, Leopoldo Cavalli has had an impact on the Italian cultural and entrepreneurial scene through various other initiatives. In 2015, he acquired and relaunched Fonoprint, a historic recording studio with over 40 years of history founded by singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla. In just a few years, he created Italy’s first Museum of Sound and Music in his hometown of Bologna (a UNESCO City of Music), along with an academy for young talented singer-songwriters. Fonoprint also organizes events supporting Italian songwriting and produces albums for the country’s emerging music scene.
In 2021, during the height of the COVID pandemic, Cavalli—through Fonoprint—acquired Bologna’s two most important theatres, the Teatro EuropAuditorium and Teatro Celebrazioni, relaunching them with over 200 curtain calls per year and initiating major architectural improvements, including renovation and energy requalification works, to preserve their cultural and artistic heritage.
A third chapter in his entrepreneurial career is the redevelopment of the Darsena del Sale, a historic 18th-century building (formerly the Salt Warehouses of Cervia), which spans nearly 20,000 square meters and features an exclusive saltwater basin. This architectural and functional restoration project has significantly contributed—and continues to contribute—to the development of the hospitality and tourism sector in the city of Cervia and along the entire Romagna Riviera. After winning the European public tender for the concession of this important heritage site, and following two uninterrupted years of construction, the Darsena was inaugurated in January 2022. Just six months later, it won the Architizer A+ Awards Popular Choice in the Architecture + Water category. The project has been featured in numerous specialized magazines across the fields of design, gastronomy, and tourism worldwide.
Darsena now stands as a temple of well-being and the art of living, o$ering a stunning spa, a large food and wine production area, and a ceremonial hall built around a saltwater pool. Today, the Darsena hosts nationally and internationally renowned artists from the literary, musical, and theatrical worlds.
His entrepreneurial vision, remarkable ability to innovate, and ongoing commitment to social causes—as well as to the preservation and promotion of Italy’s architectural, artistic, and cultural heritage—make him a prominent figure in the country’s business landscape today.
